The Nursing Team Leader reports to the Unit Director and oversees a 31 bed Inpatient Mental Health Unit, Crisis Intervention Services. The Nursing Team Leader is responsible and accountable for organizing and directing all aspects of these services and works collaboratively with the Unit Director and hospital departments in supporting operations and patient throughput. The Nursing Team Leader is responsible and accountable in implementing the unit's overall strategic plan as set by the Unit Director and Executive Director. As a member of the healthcare team, demonstrates nursing expertise as a clinician, coordinator, educator and innovator of care and services. The individual is responsible for coordinating the nursing activities of the department and serves as a liaison to internal and external customers. The position provides oversight of the department in the absence of the Unit Director. The Nursing Team Leader provides leadership and management in the areas of customer satisfaction, provision of safe and effective care, finance, human resources, communication, patient advocacy, performance, and leadership and professional development.

SUMMARY (ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES)

CUSTOMER SATISFACTION - Provides leadership that results in meeting and/or exceeding customer satisfaction targets for patients/families, physicians, and employees

PROVISION OF SAFE & EFFECTIVE CARE - Collaborates with staff, medical leadership, and other interdisciplinary health care personnel to ensure safe and effective care that meets/exceeds regulatory requirements and professional industry standards

FINANCE - Manages financial resources effectively and efficiently that results in meeting and/or exceeding financial targets

HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT - Manages human resources effectively and efficiently

COMMUNICATION - Establishes effective means of intra and inter unit/departmental communications

PATIENT ADVOCACY - Advocates for the patient/family rights and educates patient/family concerning their responsibilities

PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT / QUALITY OF PRACTICE - Provides leadership for continuous performance improvement and staff development

LEADERSHIP & PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT - Creates an environment of high performance expectations, exhibits qualities of an effective leader, and serves as a leader/role model via professional development

SUMMARY (ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES - CONTINUED)

1. Proactively maintains staffing by ensuring that a job offer is made for all vacant positions within 4 weeks of identification of a vacancy.

2. Tracks staff attendance as a function of staff performance and maintains adequate PRN staffing pool to fill gaps.

Joint Commission Leadership: Health and Safety/QI Reporting

3. Maintains a database (or electronic log) of all incidents involving safety of staff and patients including root cause analysis and corrective action of such events.

4. Leads regular meetings and creates new policies or workflows regarding the improvement of patient and staff safety based on the analysis above.

5. Tracks seclusion and restraint trends and adherence to protocols.

6. Maintains updated electronic copies of all policies and provides orientation and monitoring of practices.

7. Provides leadership related to all Joint Commission initiatives through the creation of necessary policies and monitoring of performance in the form of staff interviews, record reviews, etc. Reports on areas of non-compliance or risk and provides a plan to mitigate or eliminate such risks.

9. Implements at least one performance initiative per quarter and provides weekly/monthly written progress reports to department management.

Utilization Review and Charge Capture

10. Monitors the utilization (length of stay) for CIS and inpatient beds. Produces a weekly report that identifies outliers (excessive/unnecessary length of stay) including patient name, treating MD and circumstances. Addresses administrative delays in admitting and discharging patients with the treating MD.

11. Ensures 95% of all services funded by the state grant of Medicaid Rehab Option are authorized within 24 hours of service delivery.

12. Ensures that 90% of assigned staff members meet expectations related documentation requirements (treatment plans, progress notes, etc.). This is evaluated through chart audits.

Department Leadership

13. Participates as an active member of the management team attending all calls and meetings as appropriate.

14. Represents Department and Unit Director in hospital initiates and committees as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Current Georgia License as a Registered Professional Nurse. Bachelor Degree in Nursing preferred. Minimum of 3 years of clinical nursing experience. Previous charge or supervisory experience and CPR certification are required.
