DUTIES:
Duty Location: Charlie Norwood Veterans Affairs Medical Center - Augusta, GA

You will serve as a Lead Medical Supply Technician monitoring all Quality Assurance (QA) activities of the Sterile Processing Department (SP) for Nursing Service. You will monitor work performed in all work areas of the department, which includes decontamination, instrument preparation/assembly, processing and case cart operations, as they relate to support of the Operating Room and other clinical areas. You will perform all other duties as assigned.

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

Work Schedule: Full-Time Employment: 8:00 am - 4:30 pm Monday - Friday

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience to perform the duties of this position. To be creditable, this experience must have been gained to at least the equivalent of the next lower grade level in Federal service. Examples of specialized experience may include but are not limited to: processing, assembling, trouble-shooting, preparing, sterilizing, storing, and issuing sterile and unsterile medical supplies and equipment; possessing knowledge of the technical names, general uses, physical characteristics, and operating conditions of medical supply items; knowledge of decontamination, cleaning, preparation, sterilization, and storage procedures; knowledge of aseptic techniques; and skill in operating a washer-sterilizer, ultrasonic instrument cleaners, and gas and steam sterilizers. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include work as an operating room technician, medical instrument technician, nursing assistant, corpsman, or laboratory worker; possessing of aseptic principles and techniques, including of sterilized operations, sterilizer mediums, and testing to determine the effectiveness of sterilization, packaging, storage, and shelf life, proper handling and rotation of sterile packages, and handling of contaminated items; possessing of microbiology as they apply to the operation of the Sterile Processing Services (SPS) and role of cleaning and sterile of Reusable Medical Equipment in the overall infection control program; understanding of medical and surgical terminology; understanding of how instruments are packaged, wrapped, and sterilized using the appropriate method of sterilization and/or high level disinfectant to make ready redistribution for patient use. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. ~OR~

Possess at least one (1) full year of graduate level of education with studies directly related to this position. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. This education must have been obtained in a college or university. A transcript or course listing must be submitted if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education. Possess an equivalent combination of specialized experience and graduate level of education as (described above) to meet total experience. To calculate the combination of experience and education, determine the amount of experience you have as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level. Then determine the amount of education you have as a percentage of the education required for the grade level. Add the two percentages; the total percentage must equal at least 100% to qualify for the grade level. (UNOFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED) ~AND~

In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.

You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other characteristics (KSAOs) as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:

Knowledge of decontamination, sterilization and high level disinfecting processes for Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) including instrumentation. Knowledge of medical instruments and Sterile Processing supplies e.g. recognizing surgical instruments, differentiate similar appearing instruments, decontaminate, prepare and assemble instruments sets and peel packages. Knowledge of infections control processes and understanding of importance of clean, sterile, contaminated items. Ability to communicate, both orally and in writing with people from various backgrounds and education levels.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The employee usually stands and moves from one part of the room to another in performance of assigned duties, and is also required to travel throughout the medical center (both uptown and downtown divisions) making pickups and deliveries (as needed). There is a frequent requirement for lifting SPS related supplies, chemicals and instrument sets weighing up to 25 pounds, from floor level to chest level. Dexterity and strength are required in lifting and positioning baskets and boxes overhead, weighing ten pounds or more. Regularly pushes instrument carts into and out of the sterilizers, cart washers and instrument washer/disinfectors weighing up to 50 pounds for short and long distances.

Applicants will be ranked based on four quality groups, as follows:

Best qualified - applicants possessing experience that substantially exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are highly proficient in all requirements of the job and can perform effectively in the position;

Highly qualified - applicants possessing experience that exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in most of the requirements of the job;

Well qualified - applicants possessing experience that meets the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in some, but not all, of the requirements of the job; and

Qualified - applicants possessing experience and/or education that meets the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors.

After the vacancy announcement closes, reviewed applications are evaluated against the questionnaire responses and placed in the appropriate quality group. Qualified veterans will be afforded preference by being placed at the top of the appropriate quality group.
