Position Summary

The Director, Leadership Development is a key leader in the GRU Enterprise and serves as the “go to” person for all matters related to leadership competence education. The Director often speaks with and for the President and the executive leadership team reg! arding GRU/GRHealth leadership education. S/he serves as the central architect, facilitator, implementer, manager and overseer of the design and development of the curriculum, policies and protocols, evaluation of benefit, and opportunities for leadership research and scholarship. Reporting to the EVP for Academic Affairs/Provost (with a matrix reporting line to the EVP for Health Affairs) the Director, Leadership Development also works collaboratively with the Vice President for Academic and Faculty Affairs and the Enterprise Vice President for Human Resources in support of Faculty Professional Development and Workforce Development.

Principal Accountabilities:
The Director, Leadership Development manages and oversees the Leadership Academy and serves as the Chief Leadership Development Officer for GRU and GRHealth, which includes the following responsibilities:

Fosters and supports a culture of development through regular sharing of trends, new! pedagogical methods, emerging technologies and relevant publications; ! oversees web based access to development resources and activities.

Plans and oversees leadership program curriculum design, engaging subject matter experts selected from across the University and GRHealth, and has responsibility and authority for managing the entire design and development of the curriculum ensuring it is responsive to the current enterprise-wide training needs and strategic objectives of the university.

Provides support for the assessment of leadership development and learning.

Supports faculty development by working with the faculty development committee to regularly review and reduce duplication between Faculty Development and the Leadership Academy offerings.

Nurtures, identifies, recruits, and admits a diverse group of participants in programs and ensures well developed content that is timely, relevant, and professionally delivered.

Oversees all communication and marketing plans related to the Leadership Acad! emy in collaboration with the Office of Communications and Marketing.

Collaborates with Vice President of Student Affairs to develop and maintain high quality leadership educational opportunities for students.

Refines, assesses, and continually improves all aspects of the leadership program evaluation process.

Manages the budget and participates in strategies for sustainability and funding of the Leadership Academy.

Other duties as determined by the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs/Provost.

Expected Short-Term Accomplishments

Leadership Academy performance will be directly linked to measurable tangible results that drive performance improvements and the execution of the GRU and GRHealth strategy and its related multi-year enterprise wide metrics. Success will not be determined by full training calendars, statistics on how many trainings or people trained, although these will all be tracked.

Measu! rable outcomes include:
Working collaboratively with the enterp! rise-wide Institutional Effectiveness Office on the establishment of assessment procedures to measure the actual numbers/percentage of managers/administrators actually delivering their annual key performance goals.

Ensuring that participation in Leadership Academy opportunities demonstrates an increase in the percentage of delivery effectiveness.

Effective succession planning as evidenced by increases in the number of open positions filled from within the enterprise.

Decreases in staff and faculty turnover rate with corresponding increases in key measures from the various workforce surveys.

Performance Execution ~ in future years:
Educate the 20% of Managers/Administrators falling in the underperforming category and reducing that percentage through proactive education/guidance.

Develop them to achieve the next tier up (at minimum) in ratings from the employee engagement survey.

Qualifications

Ideal ca! ndidate must bring professional maturity to the position and ability to drive the university and health system strategy by aligning the development of people with strategic priorities and goals. The successful candidate will possess the following skills and characteristics:

Has a deep understanding of using adult learning principles and new learning modalities to meet the professional development needs of a diverse workforce (eg, students, early career and mid- career faculty, staff, management, senior and executive leadership.)

Has a full complement of skills, from business and academics. Analytics, technology, learning theory, performance management, scientific inquiry and research are preferred.

Demonstrates leadership skills and ability to manage all operations of the Leadership Academy.

Demonstrates strategic thinking and execution as a hands-on training specialist.

Significant administrative and leadership experience in suc! h areas as leadership or academic education programming and development! ; involvement in unique, innovative and alternative methods for teaching is desirable.

An ability to champion leadership education within a research university and a health system, and among a wide range of internal and external constituencies.

Emphasis on, and a commitment to, increasing the diversity of thought among faculty, staff and students.

Experience in strategic planning and effective implementation of strategies.

Experience in coordinating a variety of complex projects simultaneously within a range of program deadlines.

Ability to actively develop and sustain constructive and collaborative relationships and alliances.

Experience in providing learning opportunities through matrixed resources and third parties through the engagement and support of key faculty, Deans, Chairs and Senior Administrators in developing content and delivering educational programs.

Fiscal experience with creation and management ! of budget and other resources

A Ph.D. or Ed.D. with ten (10) or more years of experience in higher education with progressively increasing levels of management and leadership responsibility, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Provost’s Office, University Administration, and/or Academic Faculty Professional Development, or comparable areas preferred.

Affinity with the overall mission of GRU and GRHealth.

The successful candidate must exhibit high energy and enthusiasm while working effectively within a broad academic environment.

Relationship Building: The successful candidate will have a demonstrated track record of building strong relationships at all levels and the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary systems-based environment. He/she must be able to establish relationships with students, peers, subordinates and superiors effectively and understand and appreciate the sometimes competing missions of an academic institution. The successful candidate will be seen as a collaborator and someone who can effect change through relationships.
