Incumbent works in Mental Health Service Line of the Atlanta VA Medical Center and supports the mission and vision of the Medical Center. S/he works as a member of either the Substance Abuse Treatment Program providing care to a panel of dually-diagnosed outpatient veterans in a group setting, outpatient substance abuse/behavioral health evaluations to eligible Veterans who are being referred to our substance abuse treatment program (SATP) and provide consultation to the medical and surgical floors for patients with substance abuse disorders. The Domiciliary to provide health and mental health services for veterans in residence. Acute Inpatient Psychiatr y providing psychiatric care to veterans who are currently hospitalized on a psychiatric unit. S/he must communicate and collaborate effectively with a variety of clinicians in order to ensure quality treatment and care to the veteran. S/he submits comprehensive assessments with detailed evaluations of patient's psychiatric and substance abuse conditions including current conditions, past history, substance abuse history, trauma history, mental status exam, diagnosis and future plans for patients seen in a routine and crisis care. S/he will collaborate with psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, addiction therapists, and social workers in a multidisciplinary treatment team approach.

DUTIES:
The PA is responsible for the assessment and treatment of complex cases, to include veteran's families and medical/mental health/ substance abuse disorders as it relates to family issues. The PA is expected to consult with fellow team members and other health/mental health professionals on a regular basis regarding individual cases. The PA will provide clinical supervision to other clinicians on the team, as necessary, if instructed by Team Leader. The PA works under the direct supervision of a VA psychiatrist. The PA responsibilities include performing Mental Health Admission History and Physicals, reassessing patient in accordance with medical center and unit policies, daily management of patients during the admission, completing discharge summaries, psychosocial assessments, individual, marital and group psychotherapy, and psycho-education . The PA will also provide supervision of PA students.

WORK SCHEDULE: Full Time, Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm, THE SELECTED INCUMBENT MAY BE REQUIRED TO WORK WEEKENDS, EVENINGS OR OTHER IRREGULAR TOURS OF DUTY

POSITIONS OPEN UNTIL FILLED CUT-OFF EVERY 30 DAYS

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
QUALIFICATIONS

Citizenship - Citizen of the United States. (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section a, paragraph 3g, this part.)

English Language Proficiency - PAs appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).

EDUCATION

(1) A bachelor's degree from a PA training program which is certified by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education of the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA); OR

(2) Graduation from a PA training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a bachelor's degree in a health care occupation or a health-related science; OR

(3) Graduation from a PA training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a period of progressively responsible health care experience such as an independent duty medical corpsman, licensed practical nurse, registered nurse, medical technologist, or medical technician. The duration of approved academic training and health care experience must total at least 5 years.

REQUIREMENTS

Certification - As of March 12, 1993, certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physicians Assistants (NCCPA) is a requirement for employment. This requirement does not apply to non-certified PAs on VA rolls as of that date.

VETERANS PREFERENCE: Five points may be added to the eligible ratings of veterans who: Entered the military service prior to October 14, 1976; served on active duty during the Gulf War between August 2, 1990 and January 2, 1992, regardless of where the person served; or, served in a military action for which they received a campaign badge or expeditionary medal. Medal holders and Gulf War veterans must have served continuously for at least 24 months or the full period for which called or ordered to active duty. Ten points may be granted to the eligible ratings of disabled veterans; Purple Heart recipients; spouses or mothers of a 100 percent disabled veteran; or the widows, widowers, or mothers of a deceased veteran.
